In practice
Cardboard boxes sold at $3.20 each (1–24), $2.75 (25–99), $2.40 (100–499), $2.10 (500+). A café ordering 60 boxes sees $2.75 per unit live as they type quantity. A restaurant ordering 200 sees $2.40 — no negotiation, no invoice amending, fully automated.
Sports uniform sold at $45 (1–4 units), $40 (5–9), $36 (10+). A school P&C coordinator orders 14 items and sees the $36 rate applied automatically. The tier table on the product page made the volume incentive obvious before they even added to cart.
Pro tips
Make the tier table prominent — don't let shoppers discover the better price by accident. The 'Buy more, save more' widget on the PDP is shown by default; don't hide it.
Leave the top tier open-ended (e.g. 100+ with no max) rather than capping it — some buyers want to order 500 and shouldn't hit a dead end.
For B2B stores combine quantity breaks with POA (Price on Application) for your most sensitive wholesale tiers — keep standard retail visible, hide strategic pricing behind login.
