In practice
The public catalogue is fully browsable: product names, specs, images and descriptions are all visible. The price column shows 'Trade account required'. Electricians register for an account and are approved within 24 hours. Once logged in, they see their negotiated trade rates and can place orders.
Pro tips
Always show product content (images, descriptions, specs) to unauthenticated visitors — the catalogue is your sales tool. Only hide pricing.
Keep the account application process short — if it takes more than 3 minutes to apply, you lose a meaningful percentage of interested trade buyers.
Use the placeholder label as a conversion message, not just a gate: 'Create a free trade account for wholesale pricing' is far more compelling than 'Login required'.
