Subscribe & Save lets shoppers lock in a recurring delivery schedule and receive a discount for committing. You get predictable monthly recurring revenue; they get their favourite product without remembering to reorder. Billing, fulfilment queuing and cancellations are handled automatically through Stripe Billing.
What you get
Define weekly, fortnightly, monthly or custom intervals per product
Configurable discount percentage per interval (e.g. 15% off monthly, 10% off quarterly)
Subscription-only mode β require subscription to purchase (for subscription-first products)
Customer self-manages in their account β cancel or update their card without contacting support
Recurring charges via Stripe Billing β no manual invoicing
Attach optional or mandatory add-on products β they ride on the SAME subscription and invoice, not a separate charge
Subscription revenue tracked separately in the Analytics dashboard
When to use this
Best suited to consumable products with a predictable usage cycle β protein powder (monthly), coffee (fortnightly), supplements (monthly), pet food (monthly), cleaning supplies (quarterly). The discount incentive works best at 10β20% β enough to motivate the commitment without giving away too much margin.
Best suited for
How to set it up
Open a product in the editor and scroll to the Subscriptions section
Enable subscription options and click Add interval
Select the interval (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, custom) and set the discount percentage
Add multiple intervals if you want to give shoppers a choice
Optionally enable Subscription only β this removes the one-time purchase option
To sell an add-on alongside it, mark the add-on product as "Add-on" in the catalog, then attach it to the base product as Mandatory (always included) or Optional (shopper opts in)
Save β the Subscribe & Save widget (and any add-ons) appears on the product page below the price
Connect Stripe in Dashboard β Payments if not already done β subscriptions require a connected Stripe account (Mika never holds your customers' payments)
In practice
3 intervals: Monthly (15% off), Bi-monthly/every 2 months (10% off), Quarterly (5% off). 40% of purchasers choose the monthly subscription. Average subscriber retention is 8 months. Monthly subscribers are worth 8Γ the revenue of a one-time buyer over 12 months.
Subscription-only mode for the 'Auto-ship' SKU β priced 20% below the standard one-time product. Shoppers who want the lower price must subscribe. Creates a clear tier separation between casual shoppers and committed customers.
A monthly coffee subscription with an optional "extra bag" add-on and a mandatory reusable filter on the first box. The shopper sees one price, one checkout, and one card charged each month β the add-ons show up as extra lines on the same invoice, not a second transaction.
Pro tips
The discount needs to feel meaningful β 5% is too small to motivate a commitment; 15β20% is the sweet spot for most categories.
Keep cancellation genuinely easy in the customer account β subscribers who feel trapped churn faster and leave worse reviews than ones who could leave any time.
Highlight the annual saving ('Subscribe and save $72 per year') rather than the per-order discount β the cumulative number is more compelling.
Use Mandatory add-ons sparingly β for things the subscription genuinely can't work without (a starter kit, a required filter). Everything else should be Optional so shoppers don't feel upsold at checkout.
