Open a product that qualifies and tick Bulky item or Dangerous goods in the product editor
Save — the flag is applied immediately across all cart surfaces and checkout
Optionally add a Checkout compliance gate in Dashboard → Store → Alerts for dangerous goods items — forces shopper acknowledgement
The surcharge applies automatically at checkout when a flagged item is in the cart
In practice
Bull bars and roof racks are marked Bulky. A $45 freight surcharge applies at checkout. The CartDrawer shows 'Bulky item — freight surcharge applies'. The checkout summary lines: Shipping (standard) $12.95 + Bulky item surcharge $45.00. No surprises — the shopper knew before they reached payment.
All chemical concentrate products are marked Dangerous Goods. A Checkout gate requires the buyer to tick 'I confirm this product will be handled in accordance with the Safety Data Sheet'. The surcharge covers road-freight-only logistics. A warning in the cart notes 'Air freight unavailable — road delivery only'.

Review your carrier invoices to set the surcharge amounts accurately — the goal is cost recovery, not a profit centre.
Show the surcharge in the product description as well as the cart — 'Please note: a $45 freight surcharge applies to oversized items' eliminates checkout abandonment from surprised shoppers.
