Targeted Product Visibility lets you make individual products or categories invisible to the public and to specific customer groups — visible only to assigned group members. The product doesn't appear in search, catalogue listings or any sitemap. It simply doesn't exist for anyone without the right group membership. Useful for exclusive ranges, test launches, pre-release products and restricted-supply items.

What you get
Product completely invisible to non-assigned visitors — no URL, no search result, no category listing
Visibility resolved per product — some products public, some restricted, all in the same catalogue
Assign visibility to multiple groups — a product can be visible to Group A and Group B but not Group C
Admin can always see all products regardless of group assignment
Invisible products still tracked in inventory and analytics for internal reporting
Can combine with group price overrides — different groups see the same product at different prices
When to use this
Use targeted visibility for products that should only be accessible to specific buyer categories: exclusive OEM parts for authorised service centres, pre-release products available to VIP buyers only, restricted-supply chemicals or medical products available only to licensed buyers, or confidential custom-spec items ordered by a specific contract customer.
Best suited for
How to set it up
Create and assign customer groups first (Dashboard → Customers → Groups)
Open a product in the editor and scroll to Visibility
Change visibility from 'Public' to 'Restricted' and select which groups can see it
Save — the product is immediately invisible to all non-assigned visitors
To verify: log out and confirm the product doesn't appear in search or category listings
In practice
20 OEM parts are only available to 'Authorised Dealer' group members. Public visitors see nothing. An authorised dealer logs in, navigates to Genuine Parts, and sees the exclusive range. The parts have dealer-specific pricing and ordering requirements not applicable to retail.
Pro tips
Don't use visibility gating as your only security layer for genuinely sensitive products — pair it with order restrictions and an approval process for the customer group.
Document your visibility rules — a new staff member or handover should be able to understand which products are visible to which groups without reverse-engineering the settings.
Test visibility from a logged-out browser and a logged-in non-assigned account before going live — confirm the product is truly invisible to unauthorised visitors.
